Open walked-up test – 21 May 2023, Winster

A little earlier in the year than usual, to avoid too much bracken growth, the Club held its annual open walk-up test at Winster, near Windermere. Landowner Brian Scowcroft and his gamekeeper Nick were once again generous in allowing the club to use excellent walk-up ground. The Test was well supported with 31 entries, and we were fortunate to have a warm and dry day, though a lack of breeze made it hard for the dogs at times.

As always with field trial lines some dogs were luckier than others with the fall of dummies in the rolling ground alongside the lake, but all except three were able to progress to the second round and fifteen progressed to the third round and a sixth retrieve.

Enormous marked retrieves launched by organiser Richard Howson, and difficult blinds hidden in bracken behind the line tested each dog to the full in warm, still conditions. Those who survived into the awards had really earnt their places and we were delighted that our Field Trial Secretary, Kirsty Howson was declared the winner.

Thanks go to a small army of helpers who made the day possible, including Working test secretary Peter McCurrie, judges Paul Hasney, Becky Thistle, Steve Burns and Matthew Rowlinson. The dummy throwers were Peter McCurrie, Richard Howson, Drew Whitelaw and Sonja Ludwig. Brenda Lawson ran the line and game carriers were Jill Cummings and Nigel Williams. It was an excellent team event.

Burns and Becks Open Trial 27 October 2023

The Burns and Becks Gundog Club held it’s one day open trial on 27 October 2023 at HyFly in Lancashire, by kind permission of the Holden family. Many thanks to our judges Henrik Vilendal, Nicola Reynolds, John Yarwood and Judith White, and all our amazing helpers who made the trial possible, including the guns, game carriers, dog stewards, pickers up, caterer and Kirsty Howson, our Field Trial Secretary.

The weather was kind and we saw some very good dog work during the day, but the last four dogs standing were a bit unlucky, so unfortunately the trial finished without a result.

Burns and Becks Novice Trial 3 November 2023

The Burns and Becks Gundog Club held it’s Novice Trial on 3 November 2023 at HyFly in Lancashire, by kind permission of the Holden family. Many thanks to our judges Tom West, John Henderson, Matthew Rowlinson and Kirsty Howson and helpers who made the trial possible, including the guns, game carriers, dog stewards, pickers up, caterer and Kirsty Howson, our Field Trial Secretary.

The weather was lovely and keeper Tom Lawrenson and his team provided us with a steady supply of game. During the first round we had quite a few dry runs which most of the dogs handled well. Paul Dixon’s Morayglen Hawk of Thornship picked a lively partridge that flicked and flew on before he caught up with it again and Darren Hope’s Kenynten Tokyo had two technical eye wipe’s reaching the area the previous dogs did not. Seven dogs completed the first round. We moved into the second round and swiftly lost three more dogs. We continued on with the final four dogs in line through another field of sugar beet where a few partridge and ducks were shot in quick succession. The last bird of the day turned out to cause more headaches than any of us would like. It was a partridge about 70yrds across the beet field just into some rough grass on the edge of a ditch and despite all dogs getting to the area and two dogs doing a very thorough job of the area non of them picked and sadly the bird was picked by the judges. We saw some very good dog work throughout the day and last four dogs were rather unlucky on their last retrieve. Sadley, the trial finished without a result.
