Burns and Becks Gundog Club – One Day Open Field Trial 24 October 2025

Today the Burns and Becks Gundog Club held their second trial of the season at HiFly in Lancashire, a One Day Open. Luckily the weather was much better than forecasted with a mix of sunshine and showers, and the demanding ground with an abundance of game provided some challenging retrieves for a very good field of dogs. Eight out of the 14 dogs went through to the third round, with two dogs finishing the trial.

Many thanks to the Holden Family for kind permission to use the ground, and to keeper Dylan who did an excellent job as Steward of the Beat. A big thank you also to our judges Thomas Bushby, Nicola Reynolds, Karen McCarthy and Reuben Mort, our FT Secretary Kirsty Howson, Richard Howson and his excellent team of guns, as well as our other helpers on the day: dog stewards Sonja Ludwig and Pat Dixon, game carriers India Bunting and Jo Fenna, and picker-up Nick West. Also, many thanks to Pat Dixon for the excellent catering at the end of the trial.

Burns and Becks Novice 16 dog field trial 17 October 2025

Today Burns and Becks Gundog Club held their first trial of the season, at Winderwath Estate, nr Penrith. We had a fantastic day, it remained dry for the day but with little wind, making it challenging for the dogs at times.

An excellent team of guns made the day run smoothly, through cover crops and open grass fields.

Round one consisted of 3 fields of turnips & rape which we walked up, the first field was super the game came steadily, the guns barely missing a bird and some clean and tidy dog work. In the second field there was more game and plenty of ground game, this proved too tempting for a few dogs and by the end of the first round we had lost 10 dogs. The second round was completed on a drive with birds landing in a grass field where another dog was lost. Five dogs went through to the final round where they were asked to pick more birds from a turnip and rape crop. Four dogs finished the trial having completed 5 retrieves. It was a tight decision for the judges but after much discussion, the following awards were given.

Burns and Becks Gundog Club – Open Walked-up Test 01 June 2025

We held our second and final test of the season today at Winster, Cumbria, by kind permission of keeper Nick and the Winster Estate. Many thanks to the judges Keith Broomfield, Stephen Hore, Kevin Butler and Sonja Ludwig, and our WT Secretary India Richardson. Special thanks also to our helpers, without whom days like this would not be possible – dog stewards Pat Dixon and Denise Dent, steward of the beat Nigel Barton, dummy throwers Richard Howson, Martin Wilson, Keith Barnes and Nigel McIlroy, dummy carriers Jill Cummings and Ellie Rutherford, and catering by Pat Dixon.

Despite the soggy weather, everyone was in good spirits, and the open dogs were thoroughly tested by challenging retrieves on undulating and at times very boggy ground, with a mix of open areas, bracken and woodland. We saw some excellent dog work, with seven dogs taken forward into the final 6th round, and five dogs completing the test.

Burns and Becks Gundog Club – Puppy Safari and Novice Walk-up Tests 27 April 2025

We held our first test of the season today at Winster, Cumbria, by kind permission of keeper Nick and the Winster Estate. Many thanks to the judges Keith Barnes, Brenda Lawson, Paddy Merrall and Vicky Waterfield, and everyone who helped on the day by throwing or carrying dummies, running the line, dog stewarding, catering or selling raffle tickets – days like this would not be possible without you! Special thanks also to our new WT Secretary India Richardson for her successful debut, as well as to Nigel Barton and Martin Wilson, who organised the day and set the tests.

The puppies were taken through their paces on challenging ground with an abundance of game scent, but coped admirably with the conditions.

The novice walk-up had its own challenges with demanding marks and blinds on undulating ground and across steep-sided valleys with bracken banks and marshy ground in the bottom. From a very strong field of 27 dogs, 16 were taken through to the third round, with three dogs in a final run-off.
