Blessed with great weather, we had our first test of the season today at Winster, Cumbria. We are grateful to Brian Scowcroft, keeper Nick, and the Winster Estate for providing the club with this excellent ground.
Many thanks also to the judges Nicola Reynolds, Steve Burns, Steve Hore and Sonja Ludwig, and our band of fabulous helpers: dummy throwers Les, Martin, Olly, Kevin and Tim, dummy carriers India, Victoria and Lois, test secretary Peter McCurrie, Nigel Barton for expertly running the line, as well as Pat Dixon for the catering and dog stewarding. Without your help the tests would not have been possible!
The puppies were tested on challenging ground with an abundance of game scent and the odd live distraction. They all coped admirably well with the conditions.
RESULTS PUPPY:
1st Place – Upperaughton Dallas – Kevin Hunt
2nd Place – Tattney Its Now Or Never – Paul Hasney
3rd Place – Upperaughton Oregon – Arthur Telfair

The novice walk-up had its own challenges with bracken banks, gutters, and live scent to deal with. The first round consisted of retrieves both in front and behind to give the dogs a nice lead into the more challenging retrieves that were to follow. Heel work and steadiness were thoroughly tested and accounted for a number of dogs being dropped. The last 8 were taken forward to a valley with bracken banks on both sides and marshy ground in the bottom, providing the dogs with demanding blinds, marks and distractions.
RESULTS NOVICE WALK-UP:
1st Place – Sizergh Alfie – Les Earl
2nd Place – Tarncrags Snowdon – Claire Salter
3rd Place – Kanati Honey of Headnookmoss – Bob Flewitt
4th Place – Sorrelcott Miami – Nigel Williams

We held our annual Open Walked-Up Test at Winster on Sunday19/05/2024, and although it was hot the ground provided for some excellent dog work. The club is grateful to Mr Brian Scowcroft and his keeper for allowing us to run the event on this fabulous ground. Many thanks to the judges John Yarwood, Simon Capstick, Brenda Lawson and Matt Rowlinson, our fabulous dummy throwers and carriers David, Kevin, Ellie and India, and to Skinner’s for sponsoring the event.
The event ran very smoothly thanks to organising committee member Martin Wilson, test secretary Peter McCurrie, steward of the beat Nigel Barton and dog steward Pat Dixon. The judges had a difficult task arriving at the awards as the dogs proved to be closely matched. After 4 rounds and a cooling water test, they gave the following awards:

Many thanks to the judges Tom West, Gary Clark, James Fisher and Adam Mair, and to Skinners for sponsoring the event. Special thanks also to our amazing team of helpers and committee members, who assisted with organising the day, stewarding, throwing dummies, providing refreshments or contributed in any other way – we could not put on events like this without you!

The Burns and Becks Open one day trial was held today despite widespread flooding at Hifly. Keeper Tom Lawrenson managed to provide the birds needed to complete the trial despite the extreme conditions. Two duck drives provided testing retrieves in flooded stubble and turnips and two rounds were completed before a walked up third round in one of the few dry fields. Just six dogs survived to the third round and three of these were lost in the walk up.
The three remaining dogs completed a sixth retrieve to claim the places. The judges spent a long time considering each retrieve of the three dogs, and finally decided Eleanor Nunnely should be the winner. Kirsty Howson, our Field trial secretary, had special mention for an outstanding run in second place and was awarded guns choice, and Keith Barnes was pleased with an award after some recent bad luck in other trials.
The trial was characterised by excellent shooting, very good game management and outstanding judging. Our Lincolnshire trio of Godfrey Lowe, Andrew Slingsby and Richard King with new A Panel member Wayne Skett worked together to provide challenging retrieves as fairly as possible for all dogs. They took a long time to finalise their decision at the end, typical of the painstaking and conscientious approach they showed all day.
Thanks also go to a small army of helpers who came to pick up carry game, spot fallen birds and dog steward. A team effort that combined to produce an excellent trial.
(From our chairman, Paul Dixon)
RESULTS:
1st Place – Ellena Nunneley with Swiftlands Briar (making her bitch up to FTCH subject to KC confirmation)
2nd Place and Guns Choice – Kirsty Howson with Crocklets Ferris of Lunefirefly
3rd Place – Keith Barnes with Millbuies Goodwill

The Burns and Becks Gundog Club held their second and final trial at HiFly today. It was a 16 dog AV Novice and we were glad that Laura Holden, on behalf of the Holden family, was able to attend and present the prizes.
As always there was a story to the day, and in bright sunshine the trial proceeded in damp but walkable beet. Four dogs were lost very early on for heelwork, one ran in and others failed to reach the fall. At the end of the first round only four dogs remained, including Simon Capstick’s Gunnerspeg Gambler, Paul Dixon’s Sizergh Aaron of Thornship, Roz Mclroy’s Westerkames Fargo and Nigel Barton’s Lindeth Major Tom.
In the next round both Paul Dixon and Roz Mclroy were lost after failing to make the area of a bird some distance behind on the bank out of the field. A few minutes later Nigel Barton was unlucky to be faced with a runner and was lost first dog down, leaving Simon Capstick to complete the trial.
Simon was declared the winner and was fulsome in his praise for the host, judges, guns and helpers who made the trial possible.
It was an enjoyable day with a worthy winner and thanks go to judges Keith Barnes, who stepped in at the last minute, Wayne Mitchell, Rebecca Thistle and Eden Parish, who gave up their days for us.
Richard and Kirsty Howson once again organised an excellent trial for our members and the Club thanks them and our great team of helpers for their special contribution.
Paul Dixon, Chairman
RESULTS:
1st Place, Guns Choice and Best Runner – Simon Capstick with Gunnerspeg Gambler
